This tutorial is designed to teach you how to make your own simple terrain from a bitmap
image. I recommend getting photoshop and 3dsmax before you begin.

1. Open photoshop and create your terrain. Use different shades of blacks, greys, and
whites. Black being the lowest part of your map, and white being the highest part of your
map. (I've included a sample image for you to use.)

2. Open 3dsmax and create a plane. For this example, I used a length and width of 250. Set
your length and width segs to 50.

3. With your plane still selected, click on the modifier list and select "Displace."

4. Under Image, click on "Bitmap." Find the image you want to use as a bitmap. In this
example, I used "Volcano Heightmap Textured 2."

5. Under Displacement, select the strength to 100. Your terrain is now complete. Feel free
to change the strength values. This will change the height of your terrain overall.

6. To increase/decrease the detail of your terrain, simply change the number of length and
width segs. Make sure that they are the same however.
